Has your iPhone 6S ever died even though it was showing plenty of battery life? If it has, the reason may be a faulty battery. The good news is that your phone could be eligible for an iPhone 6S replacement battery. Apple has announced that it will distribute free battery replacement for “a very small number” of iPhone 6S that were manufactured in September and October 2015.
Is your handset among those eligible? Read on to find out.
How do I check if I’m eligible for a free iPhone 6S replacement battery?
Check the serial number of your mobile phone, for starters. It’s that simple. To find the number, go to Settings > General > About.
Once you’ve taken note of your iPhone 6S’ serial number, head to this Apple support page and enter the digits. It should tell you whether your handset qualifies or not.
If that’s still not working, simply take your phone to the nearest Apple Store or an Apple-authorized service provider and they can do the check for you.
It is eligible. What now?
Contact Apple support when your iPhone 6S qualifies for a free battery replacement. If you just brought it to an Apple retail store or authorized service provider for the previous procedure, simply sign the back of your handset and send it to Apple. Before you send in your phone, though, Apple recommends that you do a couple of things:
- Back up your device’s data via iCloud or iTunes.
The good thing is that you neither have to be at home nor do you need to plug your iPhone to a computer to do this. You may also make a backup using iTunes. You can do this from your PC or Mac. Keep in mind, however, that both of these backup methods don’t include ALL data and settings on your iPhone. - Turn off Find my iPhone
To turn this feature off, go to Settings > iCloud. From there, just tap on “turn off Find My iPhone” and you’re done! - Erase data and settings temporarily.
To do this, navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings. Don’t worry; you can simply restore the erased data any time later.
My phone isn’t eligible but it still shuts down unexpectedly. What do I do?
Did you buy your iPhone 6S last year? In that case, there’s a good chance that it’s still under warranty. Simply bring it to an Apple retail store and have your mobile phone checked. If the tests confirm that you’ve got a faulty battery, Apple can simply replace them for free.
When your iPhone isn’t eligible for Apple’s replacement service, but the device is noticeably suffering the same battery issues, the problem may have something to do with iOS 10. We’ve heard so many people complain that since the iOS 10.1.1 update rolled out, their iPhones begun turning off whenever the battery reaches 30% capacity. Some have even reported that their iPhone’s battery drops to 50% in less than an hour! To sort this out, try downgrading iOS 10 back to iOS 9 until Apple releases the necessary fix.
Where do I get my iPhone 6S replacement battery?
Once you’re done confirming its eligibility, backing it up, and erasing private data on your iPhone 6S, hand it over to any Apple Store or authorized service provider. They can take it from there. However, before doing so, check your iPhone 6S for screen cracks and other physical damages. Why? Because Apple may charge you a heftier sum for additional repairs that may be done at a cheaper rate in other shops. We advise that you get those fixed before sending your iPhone 6S back to Apple.
Bothered by the fact that your iPhone 6S shuts down without warning? Well, Apple has got your back. With the iPhone 6S replacement battery service, you can replace your faulty battery for free—no matter what country you’re in.
